This week’s cameo blogger is Mavis L.!  Mavis transferred to Notre Dame this year and I am so glad she did! She has been an integral part of our Sports Medicine course and brings such a positive energy to our class.  Mavis’ genuine interest in the course is evident and it also shows through the work she produces (she’s a claymation master by the way!). Sports Medicine

Although during the week of October 26th to November 3rd consisted of only two class periods, I learned a lot. This particular week covered the cardiovascular system, as well as tested our knowledge on the heart diagram. In addition, the class was assigned a case study where students were given a real life situation and students had to identify/diagnose the potential problems of an elderly couple given their daily routines. At the end of the week, I learned about the cardiovascular and respiratory system’s diseases and began the EKG lab where we learned the basics toFullSizeRender (5) a healthy and unhealthy heart beat.

Through the cardiovascular system web quest, Ms. Kahn provided a link from The Franklin Institute along with some guiding questions to learn more about the blood vessels, the right and left atrium and ventricles, the aorta, and a lot more!

Krystal's Sports Med Discoveries

After wrapping Unit 3 on the cardiovascular system and cells we completed the unit 3 exam and have finally moved onto unit 4. This week in our sports medicine class we are learning about the circulatory system, parts of the blood, and the anatomy of the heart.  This week we also completed an assignment about the benefits of playing on artificial turf versus playing on real grass.  We learned how popular artificial turf is but we also discovered the dangers of playing on it as well. The circulatory system is the part of our body that carries all the blood. This is a very important part of human anatomy and I look forward to learning more about this topic and further exploring human anatomy.  This week we are also wrapping up our job shadowing hours. #FallCUE and Soul Food

My 5th CUE Conference! I think…

It’s taken me a few days to recover from the Fall Cue Conference in Napa this weekend – I blame the awesome sessions I attended that left my mind numb and this parasite I’m growing.  I wanted to jot down a few great pearls I picked up this weekend – mostly reaffirming things I’ve learned at past CUE conferences.

First of all, being in one place with so many inspirational and like-minded educators is one of the best feelings. If my mind (and family) could handle it, I would attend conferences all the time because the teacher-high is so worth it.  I’m left with a ton of great ideas and an energy to continue to (hopefully) positively impact my students.  I won’t be able to package all the greatness of this weekend in this quick post, but there were a few things I can share.

If you haven’t hoped on board yet – do it! Utilizing Google apps greatly improves the lives of both teachers and students.  If you’re looking to increase your productivity – Google apps.  Streamline your workflow? Blog with your students, you won’t regret it

I have been blogging with my students for 3 years now, ever since I went to one of David Theriault‘s sessions on blogging (you know, the one where he made us all cry?). I started with a class blog, then leveled up to individual student blogs and now I do a bit of both.  Blogging is a one stop shop to covering many of your common core technology bases, but also an invaluable experience for your students. I explained how I implemented blogging in my classes during my presentation and the one I did with my colleague, Rebecca Girard – her wealth of knowledge is priceless!

Increase digital literacy, one step at a time

There are a million digital tools out there… I made that figure up, but there are more than any one person could ever learn and use, but don’t let that deter you! Start with just one (take a look at the Tech Toolkit I shared during my presentation). You don’t have to put your entire course online and complete every lesson using digital tools, you can incorporate one or two new tools at time, wherever they appropriately fit into your curriculum.

Oh and the last nugget I need to share with you – Stephanos Soul Food in Vallejo. Totally unassuming from the outside… fried chicken and mac n’ cheese heaven on the inside. I pulled the whole “I’m eating for two” when I cleared my plate that had enough food for 3 people. Cheers!

This week’s cameo blogger is Sofia B.! Sofia was one of my Biology students two years ago and I remember how engaged and involved she was during our Biotech Unit where they investigated a mystery and also acted as genetic counselors for a couple expecting a child.  Sofia really likes to get to the bottom of a problem and find a solution – she is a wonderful asset to a science classroom. This week, my class and I learned about the Basics of Tissue Injury. There are four types of tissue: nervous, connective, muscle, and Epithelium. The nervous tissues create reactions throughout the body. The connective tissues store nutrients and protect our organs. Our organs are also supported with this tissue. Ligaments and tendons protect joints and bones (plus the muscles connected). The Muscle Tissues help with bodily movement. They move waste, food, and blood through the body organs and are even responsible for the body’s mechanical digestion (the action of chewing)! The Epithelium Tissues protect us from bacteria and other matter by being our skin! Our muscles in our stomach help absorb food and nutrients with these tissues. The kidney is an example of an Epithelium Tissue, it filters waste.

I can remember that even as a Sophomore, Tiffany had a passion for life science, and more specifically, wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. This week, we focused mostly on our job shadowing and taking the unit 2 exam. Many of us are very eager to shadow someone related to sports medicine. The professions vary from nurses, doctors, physical therapists, personal trainers, and more. We had lots of time to think about who to shadow, and how to find that person. Many girls found their person through internships, family members, or simply picking up a phone and calling a stranger. Fellow classmate Krystal Masis is eager to figure out what her future job could be and said, “I am looking forward to shadowing someone who has a career that I may be interested in one day.” Krystal and I are shadowing the same personal trainer, Monica Ehlers. Another classmate Olivia Geronimo is also interviewing a personal trainer, and she describes her hopes of her interview as, “I’m so excited about learning about what a personal trainer…

Week 9.21.15 Agenda

This school year, each of my Sports Medicine students will be given the opportunity to share what is going on in our class through this class blog. Each student maintains their own website where they publish lab work, projects and blog posts. On their assigned week, they will share out to our readers what they experienced that week in (or outside) our class. Since Sports Medicine is a blended course, part online and part in class lab, you will get a glimpse into both sides of this course. We hope you enjoy!

Mia C. ~ I met our very first cameo class blogger, Mia, as her Biology teacher two years ago and it is so wonderful to have her as a student again! Sports Medicine

During the week of September 21st, we covered information on anatomical terms and the human anatomy.  We were given a few websites to learn these concepts.  One of the websites is very interactive and explains the concepts in a straight-forward, effortless way.  The other website helps us to drill the concepts into our minds.  We were also given a few quizzes, such as a multiple choice quiz, listing systems of the human body, and anatomical directional terms, to drill these concepts into our minds so we will remember them.


On September 22nd, we performed our first lab!  The lab was on homeostasis, which is, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica, a system that helps maintain stability and equilibrium of the internal conditions of the body, while external conditions, such as exercise, are conflicting them.
